D. whereas Iraqi Christians have recently been persecuted, deprived of their fundamental rights and forced to leave their homes and become refugees because of their religion and convictions; whereas according to Open Doors International the number of Christians in Iraq has significantly fallen, from 1,2 million at the beginning of the 1990s to between 330 000 and 350 000 now; whereas before the conflict in Syria started, around 1,8 million Christians lived in the country; whereas since the conflict started at least 500 000 Christians have been displaced;

E. whereas up to 10 000 people from the predominately Christian communities of Qaraqosh (also known as Al-Hamdaniya), a historic Assyrian town, fled their homes on 25 June 2014 after mortar rounds landed near the town; whereas since 2003 at least half of Iraq’s Christians are believed to have left the country; whereas according to Open Doors International the number of Christians in Iraq has significantly dropped from 1.2 million at the beginning of the 1990s to between 330 000 and 350 000 now; whereas the protection of Iraq’s Christians relies mainly on the armed forces of the Kurdistan Regional Government (Peshmergas), without adequate support from the Iraqi Government;

Is deeply concerned about the continuing acts of violence perpetrated against the civilian population, vulnerable groups and religious communities, including Christians; urges the Iraqi authorities to combat terrorism and sectarian violence, to protect the civilian population from further violence, to protect vulnerable groups, to protect religious communities, including Christians, to improve security and public order, and to do everything in their power to bring the perpetrators, organisers, financers and sponsors of all acts of violence and terrorism to justice; urges all states, in accordance with their obligations under international law and the relevant UNSC resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Iraqi authorities in this regard; welcomes the support expressed by the EU to the Iraqi authorities in the fight against terrorism, and the fact that the EU is ready to cooperate with Iraq on a comprehensive response to this global threat, in compliance with human rights and international humanitarian law; takes positive note of the decision by Iraq’s Council of Ministers of 21 January 2014 to prepare a study on the establishment of a province on the Ninawa Plain, which has the largest population of Christians in Iraq;

Secondly, if the Americans protected the Christians in Iraq and the minorities in Iraq, especially the Christians, they would be proving that the Christians are actually traitors; if the Americans protected them, this would be proof that the Christians were working with the Americans.
