The morning briefing session covered the science; then there was a discussion of the potential impacts of climate change in that region where the briefing was taking place; then an analysis of some of the mitigation options that would make some sense in Canada; and finally, there was a presentation on the economic dimensions of the climate change issue, both the probable costs of allowing climate change to proceed and the costs of various mitigation measures.

When I was first appointed by the Prime Minister to move over to Environment Canada, during one of our briefings our scientists presented a great supercomputer just outside Montreal airport that is responsible for all of our daily forecasting and extreme weather warnings and so forth; but in its free time, for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, it did modelling that went back in recorded history in terms of warming, in terms of climate changes.

The briefing note provides a brief overview of the impacts that climate change is having on the Indian economy, government policies that are in place that assist in adaptation to climate change in sectors, India’s contribution to global greenhouse gases and mitigation efforts currently underway and indicative areas for collaboration between the EU and India on adaptation to climate change as well as on mitigation efforts.
