Mr. Raniero Vanni d'Archirafi, Commissioner responsible for enterprise policy and the Internal Market, today inaugurated the first meeting of the Commission's Committee on Improving and Simplifying the Business Environment.

Speaking at that symposium, Mr Raniero Vanni d'Archirafi, the Member of the Commission with special responsibility for enterprise policy, pointed out that the question of business transfers had to be seen in the context of the single market: the economic potential of that market could not be fully exploited if there were insurmountable obstacles to cross-frontier business takeovers.

1 On a proposal from Mr Raniero Vanni d'Archirafi, the Commission has recently adopted the Integrated Programme in favour of small and medium-sized enterprises and the craft sector, with the aim of bringing together the various initiatives already in progress in a coherent, general framework and proposing new measures to be implemented in partnership with all the parties involved in the development of SMEs at Community, national and regional levels.
