Just in the past six weeks, Amnesty International has released the following urgent actions and press releases: One on behalf of 15 Tibetan monks who have been arrested following last month's protests but whose whereabouts remain unacknowledged and whose safety is at risk; one on behalf of a courageous human rights activist who sought to initiate public discussion of the Olympic Games within China and who was just sentenced to a three-and-a-half-year prison term as a result; one outlining concerns about the torture of three journalists arrested in India who have been accused of sympathizing with the country's Communist Party; and one documenting wide and sweeping restrictions on freedom of expression and freedom of assembly in the lead-up to the recent Russian elections.

B. whereas, according to recent reports by international human rights organisations, 32 cyber dissidents have been handed heavy prison sentences or are awaiting trial in Vietnam; 14 pro-democracy activists have been sentenced to a total of over 100 years in prison for exercising their right to freedom of expression; a group of 22 peaceful environmental activists have been given prison terms ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment; a journalist working for the state-run press was fired after writing a post on his personal blog criticising the Secretary-General of the Communist Party; and cyber dissidents, including Le Cong Cau and Huynh Ngoc Tuan, are frequently harassed and assaulted by the police;

– (PT) I would like to take this opportunity to speak in the plenary to denounce the unacceptable situation of Kader Şahin, a young Turkish Communist Party activist who has been detained by decision of the Turkish authorities since January 2007, with no grounds being given for the charges against her, or for holding her in preventive custody awaiting trial.
