Moreover, the Commission considers that it is important to normalise the status of seafarer in the context of globalisation in order to limit its harmful effects, namely social dumping which penalises seamen and shipowners complying with the rules in force, and to define decent working conditions in line with the communication on the social dimension of globalisation which makes express reference to the Convention on maritime labour.[2] Support for the ratification and entry into force of the Convention would represent an important contribution to the Commission’s commitment to promote decent labour standards worldwide, as presented in its recent communication on the matter.[3]

In its communication on Promoting Core Labour Standards and Improving Social Governance in the context of Globalisation [2], the Commission stressed the need to ensure the respect for core labour standards in the context of globalisation.
