The Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) refers to nine biogeographical regions of the EU with their own specific features: the Alpine, Atlantic, Black Sea, Boreal, Continental, Macaronesian, Mediterranean, Pannonian and Steppic regions.

The Commission decision for the Continental biogeographical region includes 4,958 sites with a surface of 49,194 km² in 8 EU member states as sites of Community importance.

The Commission will compile five further lists of such sites covering the other five biogeographic regions into which the Community is divided - Alpine, Continental, Mediterranean, Boreal and Atlantic on the basis of proposals to be submitted by Member States.
