The aim of this specific programme, which falls under the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union for research, technological development and demonstration activities (2007-13) - the 7th Framework Programme - is to develop exploratory research, proposed by researchers themselves, in order to raise the level of excellence of research in Europe.
Ce programme spécifique, qui s'inscrit dans le cadre du septième programme-cadre de la Communauté européenne pour des activités de recherche, de développement technologique et de démonstration (2007-2013) - le 7ème programme-cadre - a pour objectif de développer une recherche exploratoire proposée par les chercheurs eux-mêmes, afin de permettre de relever le niveau d’excellence de la recherche en Europe.

This shall be done by pursuing a considerable structuring effect throughout Europe on the organisation, performance and quality of research training, on the active career development of researchers, on knowledge-sharing among researchers and between sectors and research organisations, encouraging practices involving movement from academia to industry and in the opposite direction, and on the active career development of researchers, with particular reference to participation by women and young researchers in research and development, while promoting the reconciliation of work and family life.

In addition to research and technological development, they may incorporate the following types of activity, where they are of specific relevance to the objectives sought: demonstration, dissemination and exploitation; cooperation with researchers and research teams from third countries; human resource development, including the promotion of training of researchers; development of research facilities and infrastructure of specific relevance to the research being undertaken; and promotion of better links between science and society, including women in science.
