Concerning economic and social research, the fifth Framework Research Programme [12] makes it possible to study the causes of social problems, to ascertain the statistical reality and compare good practices.

The outcomes of the debates that took place at the Symposium on 'Benefits and Limitations of Nuclear Fission Research for a Low Carbon Economy' prepared by an interdisciplinary study involving, among others, experts from the fields of energy, economics and social sciences, co-organised by the Commission and the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels on 26 and 27 February 2013, recognised the need to continue nuclear research at the European level.
Les résultats des débats qui ont eu lieu lors du symposium intitulé "Avantages et limites de la fission nucléaire pour une économie bas carbone", préparé par un groupe d'étude interdisciplinaire auquel ont notamment été associés des experts issus des domaines de l'énergie, de l'économie et des sciences sociales, et co-organisé par la Commission et le Comité économique et social européen les 26 et 27 février 2013 à Bruxelles, a reconnu la nécessité de poursuivre la recherche nucléaire au niveau européen.

Streamlining the efforts of regions in an European Research Area mind-set should have two clear objectives both with a distinct added value for European research and innovation policies : first, to stimulate a better uptake of research results into the local socio-economic fabric (especially vis-à-vis small and medium size enterprises, SMEs) and help translate them faster into economic growth; and second, to increase public and private investment in research and innovation in the regions, thereby stimulating economic and social development.
Pour rationaliser les efforts des régions dans l'esprit d'un espace européen de la recherche, il faut deux objectifs précis apportant chacun une valeur ajoutée distincte aux politiques européennes de recherche et d'innovation: en premier lieu, stimuler un meilleur transfert des résultats de la recherche dans le tissu socio-économique local (notamment vis-à-vis des petites et moyennes entreprises (PME)) et les aider à traduire plus rapidement ces résultats en croissance économique; ensuite, augmenter l'investissement public et privé dans le domaine de la recherche et de l'innovation dans les régions, et stimuler ainsi le développement économique et social.

- Regrets the dispersal of responsibilities within the Commission concerning the monitoring of technical, economic and social research under the ECSC Treaty, and proposes that these areas should be regrouped within DG XII once integration has been completed;
- déplore la dispersion des responsabilités au sein de la Commission en ce qui concerne le suivi des recherches technique, économique et sociale prévues par le traité CECA, et propose que, une fois l'intégration menée à bien, ces responsabilités soient regroupées au sein de la DG XII;
