C'est en mars 1988, alors que le Sénat siégeait en comité plénier, que le très honorable Pierre Elliott Trudeau nous a rappelé l'importance des centaines de milliers de Canadiens francophones qui se sont établis dans le reste du Canada et ont essayé de préserver leur identité, des Acadiens qui ont lutté pendant des années contre l'indifférence et souvent aussi contre l'hostilité de leurs concitoyens, des générations d'hommes et de femmes politiques québécois qui ont lutté pour l'établissement du fait français, non seulement pour le Québec, mais aussi pour Maillardville, pour la Rivière de la Paix, en somme, pour le Canada français.
