– (FR) I would like to talk about the Geneva Accord and tell you that, like Jimmy Carter and Nelson Mandela, both former Presidents and winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, the European Parliament must welcome and support the initiative launched by Yossi Beilin and Yasser Abbed Rabbo, who proposed a peace plan between Israelis and Palestinians on Monday, 1 December in Geneva.

The Geneva initiative by Yossi Beilin and Yasser Abed Rabbo confirms the willingness which exists within the two civil societies to achieve peaceful coexistence in two independent, viable and prosperous states, living side by side in security, to the benefit of all Israelis and Palestinians as well as of all countries in the region.

Regrets that the conflict between Israel and Palestine has disturbed and made more difficult the Barcelona integration process and congratulates the continued efforts of the European Council, the Commission and the High Representative of the CFSP to promote peace in the region; welcomes the Geneva initiative, coming from within Israeli and Palestinian societies, with the aim of promoting a climate of confidence and lasting peace, confirming the desire to attain peaceful coexistence; considers that initiative as a valuable contribution by civil society to the Road Map, which remains the basis for an immediate restart of the peace process and has the approval of the entire International Community, supports all efforts towards a peaceful solution to the conflict, and will always strongly condemn terrorism and violence;

In conjunction with the laudable efforts of our diplomatic staff, I propose that we lend our support to this initiative by using all the resources at our disposal, by inviting, for example, the two main players – the former Israeli minister, Yossi Beilin, and the Palestinian minister, Yasser Abed Rabbo – or by awarding them the Sakharov Prize, or even by setting up a European committee to support their joint declaration.
Parallèlement aux efforts louables accomplis par nos diplomates, je propose que nous apportions notre soutien à cette initiative, en recourant à tous les moyens qui sont à notre disposition. The European Council also welcomes initiatives from civil societies on both sides, including the Geneva Peace Initiative, and is ready to further assist in the efforts to promote rapprochement, confidence building and the search for a lasting peace.
