Today's announcement is the latest in a significant number of EU-led actions in response to the crisis, notably: the EU co-hosted donors' conference, which took place in Geneva in October, at which the European Union pledged the leading amount of new funding, and together the EU and its Member States pledged almost half of the overall amount; the EU's initiative to lead the resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Council to establish an independent, international Fact-Finding Mission for the situation in Northern Rakhine State, and then to extend its mandate; as well as several high-level visits to Bangladesh and Myanmar, which enabled direct contacts with the authorities, both by High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini and the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Christos Stylianides.

The initiative has been instrumental in supporting the UN-led peace talks in Geneva, the consolidation of the Syrian opposition's negotiation platform, as well as efforts to promote an inclusive vision of transition for Syria –including through direct support to civil society networks, women and human rights organisations.

Following preparations initiated and carried out by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) with the participation of the Member States which are members of the Hague Union, the Member States which are not members of the Hague Union and the European Community, the Diplomatic Conference, convened for that purpose at Geneva, adopted the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement concerning the international registration of industrial designs (hereinafter referred to as the ‘Geneva Act’) on 2 July 1999.

Regrets that the conflict between Israel and Palestine has disturbed and made more difficult the Barcelona integration process and congratulates the continued efforts of the European Council, the Commission and the High Representative of the CFSP to promote peace in the region; welcomes the Geneva initiative, coming from within Israeli and Palestinian societies, with the aim of promoting a climate of confidence and lasting peace, confirming the desire to attain peaceful coexistence; considers that initiative as a valuable contribution by civil society to the Road Map, which remains the basis for an immediate restart of the peace process and has the approval of the entire International Community, supports all efforts towards a peaceful solution to the conflict, and will always strongly condemn terrorism and violence;

Never before though has a private agreement been given such prominence by the media, never before has an agreement called forth such high hopes, and never before has an agreement been so perfectly in line with European foreign policy, so I hope that the Council will indeed turn its attention to this Geneva initiative and will indicate our support for it even more strongly than Secretary of State Colin Powell – thank God!
Toutefois, jamais auparavant un accord privé n’a attiré à ce point l’attention des médias, jamais auparavant un accord n’a suscité autant d’espoirs, et jamais auparavant un accord n’a été aussi conforme à la politique étrangère européenne. J’espère donc que le Conseil portera effectivement son attention sur l’initiative de Genève et exprimera notre soutien encore plus fermement que ne l’a fait le secrétaire d’État Colin Powell - Dieu merci!

Calls on the Council and Commission urgently to further the Quartet's initiative in order to implement the Roadmap that was also endorsed by the UN Security Council in its Resolution 1515 and to fully support the Geneva Initiative, which constitutes a concrete and sustainable proposal for achieving peace;
