The work of the ACP-EU Joint Assembly has been crucial in terms of preventing Africa from becoming globalisation's forgotten continent.
Le travail de l’Assemblée paritaire ACP-UE a été capital, s’agissant d’empêcher l’Afrique de devenir le continent oublié de la mondialisation.

It is vital in my opinion that, even though China has turned its spotlight on the hitherto forgotten continent of Africa, its conduct must be kept within limits so as not to slip into a potential new form of colonialism, which has after all marked and written shameful pages of our own, European, history.

There are a number of reasons to explain this, ranging from the institutional (the African Union) to the political (reforms and democratisation processes), from the economic (a raw material boom, attractive investment opportunities, sustained economic growth on the continent, in recent years averaging 5.5% with nine countries in 2005 near or above the 7 percent growth threshold needed for sustained poverty reduction[1]) to the strategic (global power realignments, involvement of an increasing range of international actors in Africa), from the social (globalisation of socio-cultural norms, mass media) to the demographic (Africa soon having as many inhabitants as India or China, increasing mobility and migration within Africa and between Africa and the EU) – all closely related to a context of intensifying globalisation.
Cette évolution s’explique par toute une série de raisons d’ordre institutionnel (l'Union africaine), politique (réformes et processus de démocratisation), économique (boom des matières premières, attractivité des investissements, croissance économique soutenue sur le continent, 5,5 % en moyenne dans les dernières années avec 9 pays autour ou au-dessus du seuil de 7 % nécessaire pour une réduction durable de la pauvreté[1]), stratégique (rééquilibrage des rapports de force au plan mondial, engagement d'un nombre de plus en plus grand d'acteurs internationaux en Afrique), sociale (mondialisation des normes socioculturelles, médias) et démographique (population bientôt aussi nombreuse que celle de l'Inde ou de la Chine, mobilité accrue et migrations à l'intérieur même de l'Afrique et entre l'Afrique et l'UE), toutes ces raisons étant étroitement liées dans un contexte de mondialisation croissante.

I particularly welcome this report, as I have striven for a new perspective on Africa, a new perspective on a forgotten continent and a perspective of fraternity and solidarity towards a brother Continent.
Je salue d’autant plus ce rapport que je me suis battu pour une nouvelle perspective de l’Afrique, une nouvelle perspective d’un continent oublié et une perspective de fraternité et de solidarité à l’égard d’un continent frère.

In many senses, Africa is the forgotten continent for Canada, particularly English-speaking West Africa.
À bien des égards, au Canada, l'Afrique, et surtout l'Afrique occidentale anglophone, est le continent oublié.
