Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a study relating to Biotechnology in Agriculture and Agri-Food Joyce Groote from the Industrial Biotechnology Association of Canada made an audiovisual presentation and answered questions.

Considers it important to inform the public that biotechnology offers opportunities in various fields: from health to agriculture, from industry to alternative energy resources; opposes the view that, in medicine, genetic technology and biotechnology are primarily associated with opportunities, whereas in agriculture they are primarily associated with risks; is much more inclined to believe that in both areas there are major opportunities which should be taken advantage of, but also significant risks which need to be reduced by means of appropriate legislation;
4. juge important d'expliquer à la population que la biotechnologie offre des possibilités dans divers domaines: de la santé à l'agriculture, de l'industrie aux sources d'énergie alternative; s'oppose à la conception qui associe essentiellement le génie génétique et la biotechnologie à des opportunités dans le domaine médical et à des risques dans le domaine agricole; est bien plus enclin à croire que dans les deux domaines, il existe des opportunités majeures, dont il y a lieu de tirer parti, mais également des risques importants, qu'il convient de réduire au moyen d'une législation appropriée;
