For engines adapted for marine use as propulsion engines, where the source engine is already type-approved in accordance with Directive 97/68/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 December 1997 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to measures against the emission of gaseous and particulate pollutants from internal combustion engines to be installed in non-road mobile machinery (10), or Regulation (EC) No 595/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 June 2009 on type-approval of motor vehicles and engines with respect to emissions from heavy duty vehicles (euro VI) and on access to vehicle repair and maintenance information (11), persons adapting engines should be able to rely on the proof of conformity issued by the original engine manufacturer where those adaptations have not altered the exhaust emission characteristics.

Amongst other things, such as the promotion of marine research and the development of the various aspects of maritime technology and engineering, such as shipbuilding, a comprehensive vision of an integrated maritime policy must cover the following: the promotion of maritime transport that is more environmentally sustainable and of port infrastructure as part of their public management; promotion of fishing ensuring the modernisation of the sector and its environmental sustainability and socioeconomic viability; adequate and independent funding that does not take resources away from the European Fisheries Fund; and finally, the role and special characteristics of the outermost regions.
Une vision d’ensemble d’une politique maritime intégrée doit embrasser entre autres choses – telles que la promotion de la recherche marine et du développement et des techniques navales dans leurs divers aspects comme, par exemple, la construction navale – la promotion du transport maritime, plus viable du point de vue de l’environnement, et des infrastructures portuaires dans le cadre de leur gestion publique, une valorisation de la pêche qui garantisse la modernisation du secteur et sa durabilité environnementale ainsi que sa viabilité socioéconomique, un financement adéquat et autonome qui ne diminue pas les ressources du Fonds européen pour la pêche et, pour finir, le rôle et les caractéristiques spéciales des régions ultrapériphériques.
