The Commission has tabled a three year action programme for simplifying the existing thousands pages of EU legislation (“acquis”). This programme covers 222 basic legislations and over 1,400 related legal acts. It will be regularly updated. Simplification is no Trojan horse to water down essential regulatory protection in relation for instance to consumer protection or the protection of the environment. The real question is, whether the approach originally chosen is the most effective to reach the objectives set. Simplification of legislation means making regulation at EU and national level less burdensome for citizens and operators.
