In November 2011, a joint report was submitted to the federal government and to AFN officials, highlighting the position of the First Nations Education Council (Quebec), the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation (Northern Ontario) on priority actions with respect to improving First Nations Education.26

In February 2014, the First Nations Education Council and the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador requested a judicial review of the government’s October 2013 legislative proposal, alleging that the federal government had not fulfilled its obligations to consult and accommodate First Nations throughout the legislative process.60 To date, the application for judicial review has not been withdrawn.

According to the National Education Council and the Assembly of First Nations, from 2001 to 2006, an estimated 10,500 students did not have access to post-secondary education due to the lack of funding.
