H. whereas the Marine Knowledge 2020 initiative opened an exchange of ideas on this topic and undertook a public consultation to sound out opinions regarding the opportunities and challenges provided by access to information on marine monitoring in Europe; whereas the Commission’s initiative in publishing the Green Paper ‘Marine Knowledge 2020: from seabed mapping to ocean forecasting’ is to be welcomed;
H. considérant que l'initiative «Connaissance du milieu marin 2020» a permis d'ouvrir le débat sur ce thème et d'encourager une consultation publique pour sonder l'opinion publique à propos des opportunités et des défis inhérents à l'accès aux informations relatives à l'observation du milieu marin en Europe; considérant qu'il y a lieu de saluer l'initiative de la Commission de publier le Livre vert intitulé «Connaissance du milieu marin 2020: de la cartographie des fonds marins à la prévision océanographique»;

In August 2012 the Commission submitted the Green Paper on ‘Marine Knowledge 2020: from seabed mapping to ocean forecasting’, as part of the action being taken to promote, develop, and expand the ‘blue economy’.
Au mois d'août 2012, la Commission européenne a présenté un Livre vert intitulé "Connaissance du milieu marin 2020: de la cartographie des fonds marins à la prévision océanographique" intégré dans la promotion, le développement et l'expansion de "l'économie bleue".

Ocean observation, mapping and forecasting are therefore critical for the sustainable growth of economic activity in the Atlantic area and for furthering our understanding of the oceanic processes in the Atlantic which play an important role in determining our climate.
L’observation des océans, leur cartographie et les prévisions à leur sujet sont donc des éléments déterminants pour la croissance durable de l’activité économique dans la région atlantique et pour approfondir notre compréhension des processus océaniques dans l’Atlantique, qui jouent un rôle important dans la détermination de notre climat.

The Macaronesian biogeographical region referred to in Article 1(c)(iii) of Directive 92/43/EEC, comprises the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira (Portugal) and the Canary Islands (Spain) in the Atlantic ocean, as specified in the biogeographical map approved on 25 April 2005 by the Committee set up by Article 20 of that Directive, hereinafter the ‘Habitats Committee’.

Attention is drawn in this context to the initiative Global Monitoring for Environment and Security, which from 2008 will provide Europe-wide, up-to-date information on land-cover/land-use and ocean properties as well as incident maps in case of disasters and accidents.
