However, in view of the remarks we heard from some of our Spanish friends, I would not say that harmonisation of the text of the decisions was not difficult for the General Affairs and External Relations Council, but in the end, we managed to agree with our Spanish and Cypriot colleagues on a text which reflects unanimity, joint decision-making and collective thinking.

– (FR) I voted for the report by my excellent Cypriot colleague Panayiotis Demetriou, at first reading under the codecision procedure, on amending the 2006 decision establishing a simplified regime for the control of persons at the external borders based on the unilateral recognition by the Member States of certain residence permits issued by Switzerland and Liechtenstein for the purpose of transit through their territory.
– (FR) J’ai voté le rapport de mon excellent collègue chypriote Panayiotis Demetriou, en 1 lecture et selon la procédure de codécision sur la modification de la décision de 2006 établissant un régime simplifié de contrôle des personnes aux frontières extérieures, fondé sur la reconnaissance unilatérale par les États membres de certains titres de séjour délivrés par la Suisse et le Liechtenstein, aux fins de transit par leur territoire.

I agree with my Cypriot colleague, Mr Kasoulides, that an interesting situation is also arising on the Israeli side.
Je suis d’accord avec mon collègue chypriote, M. Kasoulides, qui a fait remarquer l’apparition d’une situation intéressante du côté israélien aussi.

I should also like to add a personal concern: we should note, in particular with regard to broadcasting in Cyprus, that there is an evident degree of manipulation of prime time slots; that there has been a deliberate exclusion of foreigners, such as Commissioner Verheugen – who will be the concitoyen européen of our Cypriot colleagues in the next few weeks; and that this represents an unwholesome spectacle unworthy of a state that otherwise seeks to, and should, fulfil the Copenhagen criteria.
Je souhaite ajouter une inquiétude personnelle: nous avons constaté, notamment dans le cadre des émissions télévisées diffusées à Chypre aux heures de grande écoute, qu’il y a un degré évident de manipulation, qu’il y a eu exclusion délibérée des étrangers, tels que le commissaire Verheugen - qui sera le concitoyen européen de nos collègues chypriotes dans les prochaines semaines - et ceci est un spectacle bien malsain et indigne d’un pays qui devrait normalement chercher à satisfaire aux critères de Copenhague.
