On 24th September, representatives of 182 countries and the EU will gather at the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Trade in Endangered Species (CITES CoP17) in Johannesburg, South Africa to agree tangible measures to better protect some of the planet's most vulnerable species.

Are we prepared to make our international bodies democratic, to support democrats in Africa, at the risk of losing a part of that excessive power that the North has over the planet, powers symbolised by the G8 who are now shut away, as if in a fortress, at Gleneagles?
Troisièmement, concernant l’accès à la démocratie, à l’État de droit, à la paix, au niveau local comme au niveau global, sommes-nous prêts à démocratiser les instances internationales, à soutenir les démocrates en Afrique, au risque de perdre une partie des pouvoirs exorbitants du Nord sur la planète, des pouvoirs que symbolise le G8 retiré aujourd’hui comme dans une forteresse à Gleneagles?

We believe this to be justified, but we cannot exclude from the fight against poverty other areas of the planet in which there are terrible pockets of misery and in which inequalities even greater than those suffered in Africa also require our priority action.
Nous estimons que cette attention particulière est justifiée, mais on ne peut exclure de la lutte contre la pauvreté d’autres régions de la planète où existent d’effroyables poches de misère et où des inégalités encore plus grandes que celles dont souffre l’Afrique nécessitent, elles aussi, une action prioritaire de notre part.
