8. To reaffirm the conviction that the European Union is not proposing only to negotiate a treaty similar to the CAFTA, it is essential to base the future association agreement on the common interest resulting from a political and economic association with the region and its separate countries, taking account of the existing asymmetry and inequalities between the two regions and amongst and within the various Central American countries, and it should also include key provisions on development cooperation.

Par conséquent, pour réaffirmer la conviction selon laquelle l'Union européenne ne propose pas uniquement de négocier un traité semblable à l'ALEAC, il est essentiel de fonder le futur accord d'association sur l'intérêt commun résultant d'une association politique et économique avec la région et les différents pays qui la composent, qui tienne compte des déséquilibres et inégalités existant entre les deux régions, de même qu'entre les différents pays d'Amérique centrale et à l'intérieur de ceux-ci, et qui comporte en outre des dispositions clés sur la coopération au développement.

In November 2002, Chile and the European Union signed an Association Agreement.[10] The Agreement establishes a political and economic association between Chile and the EU, based on reciprocity, common interest and on the deepening of the relationship in all areas of application.
