C. whereas the chair of Azerbaijan’s Legal Education Society, Intigam Aliyev, a human rights lawyer who has defended more than 200 cases before the European Court of Human Rights in the areas of infringement of freedom of speech, the right to a fair trial and electoral law in Azerbaijan, was arrested on 8 August 2014 and subjected to three month’s detention on criminal charges, an incident which confirms the growing tendency to silence and prosecute prominent human rights defenders in the country;

B. whereas since late July the government has targeted some of the country’s most prominent human rights defenders, imprisoning them on apparently politically motivated charges, with particular reference to the cases of Leyla Yunus, the well-known director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy, and her husband, the historian Arif Yunus, and Rasul Jafarov, chair of Azerbaijan’s Human Rights Club;
B. considérant que depuis fin juillet, les autorités s'en prennent à certains des principaux défenseurs des droits de l'homme, qui sont emprisonnés pour des motifs apparemment politiques, comme notamment Leyla Yunus, la directrice réputée de l'Institut pour la paix et la démocratie, son époux, l'historien Arif Yunus, ou encore Rasul Jafarov, le président du Club des droits de l'homme d'Azerbaïdjan;

L. whereas a large number of prominent human rights, political and youth activists have been arbitrarily arrested and sentenced in relation to their peaceful activities since July 2013; whereas human rights defenders Alaa Abdel Fatah, Mona Seif and Ahmed Abdallah were arrested while peacefully demonstrating against military trials of civilians, and were later sentenced on 5 January 2014; whereas the National Council for Human Rights visited Ahmad Maher, Mohamed Adel, Ahmad Douma and Alaa Adbel Fatah in prison and denounced their conditions of imprisonment; whereas the headquarters of the Egyptian Centre for Economic and Social Rights were raided by the police on 18 December and their staff arrested; whereas hundreds of students involved in anti-coup protests on university campuses have been arrested, at least five students from al-Azhar University have been killed, and several students have had severe sentences handed down to them;

whereas a Vietnamese lawyer and human rights activist, Lê Thu Hà, was arrested on 16 December 2015, at the same time as a prominent fellow human rights lawyer, Nguyễn Văn Đài, who was arrested for conducting propaganda against the state; whereas on 22 February 2016 human rights defender Trần Minh Nhật was attacked by a police officer at his home in Lâm Hà district, Lâm Đồng Province; whereas Trần Huỳnh Duy Thức, who was imprisoned in 2009 after a trial with no meaningful defence, received a sentence of 16 years followed by five years under house arrest; whereas there is serious concern for the deteriorating health of Buddhist dissident Thích Quảng Độ, who is currently under house arrest.
