It quickly became clear that close technical cooperation with the Member States is needed in order to identify objective, scientifically-based delimitation criteria. In a first step, the Commission services gave the Joint Research Centre (JRC) the task of deriving a set of soil and climate criteria that could serve as a basis for a new system for delimiting intermediate LFAs.
