The Scientific Council held 5 plenary meetings in 2012, two of which were held outside Brussels: in Sofia (Bulgaria) in April and in Limassol (Cyprus) in October.

Additional conferences were attended by Scientific Council members and ERCEA staff, where an ERC stand or session was organised to inform of ERC funding opportunities: the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF) conference held in Dublin, the Lindau Nobel Laureates’ meeting, the Nature Jobs Career Fair, the World Congress of Political Sciences and the European Congress of Mathematics, to name but a few.

With regard to the problem of choices, I believe I have told you that the main priorities, and I have already had the opportunity to answer Parliament on this issue, are, on the one hand, the work by the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) and the debates held with the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources (CRES) with various representatives of the Member States’ scientific councils, and, on the other hand, the general trends within the scientific and industrial community, be it genomics, nanotechnologies, the problem of the information society, food safety, sustainable development, and I agree with you on this that there should be more clarification on issues regarding transport, the environment and energy.
En ce qui concerne le problème des choix, je pense vous avoir dit que les grandes priorités, et j'ai déjà eu l'occasion de répondre là-dessus au Parlement, correspondent, d'une part, à un travail de l'IPTS et à des discussions avec le CRES au niveau des différents représentants des conseils scientifiques des États membres, d'autre part à ce qui est le courant général au niveau de la communauté scientifique et industrielle, que ce soit le poste génomique, les nanotechnologies, le problème de la société de l'information, la sécurité alimentaire, le développement durable, à propos duquel je conviens avec vous qu'il faut préciser davantage les questions du transport, de l'environnement et de l'énergie.

For the adoption of the measures necessary for the implementation of Chapter V, particularly those designed to ensure that all the national authorities and the Community authority apply the same principles and minimum standards for avoiding disclosure of confidential Community statistical data and the conditions governing access for scientific purposes, in accordance with Article 17 (2), to confidential data held by the Community authority, the Commission shall be assisted by the Committee on Statistical Confidentiality set up by Article 7 of Council Regulation (Euratom, EEC) No 1588/90 of 11 June 1990 on the transmission of data subject to statistical confidentiality to the Statistical Office of the European Communities (9).
