The purpose of this legislation is to apply to the sea transport sector the principle of freedom to provide transport services enshrined in the EC Treaty, in particular by prohibiting Member States from having arrangements which give services between two domestic ports (cabotage) preferential treatment over similar services bound for another Member State.
Celle-ci vise à appliquer au secteur maritime le principe de libre prestation des services en matière de transport, inscrit dans le traité CE, et a notamment pour effet d’interdire aux Etats membres de prévoir des dispositions accordant un traitement plus favorable aux prestations de service entre deux ports nationaux (cabotage) qu’aux prestations de même nature à destination d’un autre Etat membre.
