The debate covered the initial results of the establishment of the programming documents for Objective 1 and revealed substantial progress on the strategic content of the regional programmes thanks to the systematic use of evaluation, the strengthening of the partnership and giving consideration to Community priorities such as the information society and the environment.
Ce débat a porté sur les premiers résultats de la mise en place des documents de programmation de l'objectif 1. Il a fait apparaître des progrès importants sur le contenu stratégique des programmes régionaux grâce à un recours systématique à l'évaluation, au renforcement du partenariat et à la prise en considération des priorités communautaires, telles que la société de l'information ou l'environnement.

I would like to thank everybody concerned with the debate, particularly the rapporteur Brian Crowley, not because he is a colleague of mine from Ireland and a long-standing friend, but because he has put in an extraordinary amount of work to try and make this compromise acceptable to as many competing interests in Parliament as possible and also facilitated a compromise which, as Mr Medina Ortega has said, has a reasonable chance of acceptance in the Council of Minsters as well.
