- Mr President, foremost in my mind at the moment, as I prepare for the ad hoc delegation to Tunisia tomorrow – which I am delighted to be part of – is the well-being of the Tunisian people and the need for all of us to remember how important it is and why we respect their cultural values and their identity, as we help them build a new future based on the rule of law and democratic ideals.
– (EN) Monsieur le Président, au moment où je me prépare à faire partie de la délégation ad hoc qui se rendra en Tunisie demain — et j’en suis heureuse — la première chose qui me vient à l’esprit c’est le bien-être de la population tunisienne et la nécessité pour nous tous de nous rappeler son importance et pourquoi nous respectons ses valeurs culturelles et son identité, alors que nous l’aidons à construire un nouvel avenir basé sur l’état de droit et les idéaux démocratiques.

We have a responsibility, all of us here, because in the end, Tunisians – who form part of the Arab world – are showing us that the hope of freedom that we saw in 1989 in the Eastern Bloc is now being born in a country such as Tunisia. Tomorrow, we will see this in Algeria, and the day after in Egypt and Jordan.
Nous avons une responsabilité, nous tous ici, parce qu’enfin des Tunisiens, donc une partie du monde arabe, nous montrent que l’espoir de liberté qu’on a vu en 89 dans les pays de l’Est, ce même espoir est aujourd’hui en train de naître dans un pays comme la Tunisie, demain en Algérie, après-demain en Égypte et en Jordanie.

Today, we have an issue with Italy and with refugees from Tunisia, but tomorrow it may be from Algeria, Egypt or possibly Libya, from whence thousands have already come to us in the past. The fact that we do not have the Council here is a problem, of course.
Aujourd’hui, nous traitons du problème de l’Italie et des réfugiés en provenance de la Tunisie, mais, demain, ils pourraient venir d’Algérie, d’Égypte, voire de Libye, que des milliers de personnes ont déjà fui dans le passé.

Here in Parliament, tomorrow we vote on a resolution – there is going to be a delegation in the country – and our support, our democratic guarantee is also very important in these moments, particularly in Tunisia, then in Egypt and all those countries that are demanding more freedom.

Given this attitude, we are entitled to wonder if, tomorrow, Tunisia might not become a new hotbed of tension on Europe’s southern border.
