I should like to point out that when strong criticism of the present process of building Europe is voiced, there is a tendency to overlook the fact that the building of Europe and the whole political enterprise of creating the Union are an obvious success story. The Union began with six Member States. There are now 15. Very soon we could be 25, then 27, 28 and perhaps many more in the future.
Je voudrais signaler que très souvent, lorsque nous exacerbons les critiques concernant le processus actuel de construction européenne, nous oublions que cette construction et le propre projet politique de l'Union constituent l'histoire absolument évidente d'une réussite qui a débuté avec six pays et qui compte aujourd'hui 15 pays ; bientôt, nous pourrons être 25, puis 27, 28, qui sait si un jour nous serons bien plus nombreux.

It has confirmed the Union's commitment to creating the conditions for the success of further enlargement, it has reinforced the political and economic reform process, and strengthened links in many fields between the Union and the associated countries.
