In calling for the normalisation of relations between the European Union and North Korea, we did not mean to imply that we recognised a political regime which is a far cry from the fundamental values which we preach; we meant to imply that we support the so-called sunshine policy which President Kim Du-Yung has inaugurated with much courage and determination, because we realised that, without the active support of the international community, this policy would be doomed to failure in the long term and would quickly run out of steam in the short term.
En demandant la normalisation des relations de l'Union européenne avec la Corée du Nord, nous n'entendions pas par là reconnaître un régime politique, qui d'ailleurs est très éloigné des valeurs fondamentales que nous préconisons, mais nous entendions soutenir la politique qu'on appelle la "sunshine policy", que le président Kim Du-Yung a inaugurée avec beaucoup de courage et de détermination, parce que nous étions conscients que sans l'apport actif de la communauté internationale, cette politique serait vouée à l'échec à terme et s'essoufflerait très vite dans l'immédiat.
