Efforts towards the timely conclusions of the current WTO negotiations in the context of the 'Doha Development Agenda' need to be pursued in spite of the disappointing outcome of the 5th WTO ministerial meeting in Cancún, bearing in mind that the sustainability agenda constitutes the necessary balancing element without which the free-trading system promoted by the WTO cannot foster a more equitable share of the benefits of globalisation.
