The programme's aims are primarily: 1. the reliability of the high-flux reactor (HFR); this activity involves the normal use of the installation for more than 250 days a year, the management of the fuel cycle and control of safety and quality; 2. the rational use of this reactor in a broad range of disciplines including isotope production and the work related to it; the experimental irradiation of the materials intended for fission reactors and future fusion, the applications of neutrons in research in solid state physics and materials science, neutroradiography as a non-destructive testing method and the treatment of certain forms of cancer using neutrons (BNCT) and related research.
De belangrijkste doelstellingen van het programma zijn : 1) de veilige exploitatie van de HFR (hoge-flux-reactor) in Petten. Hieronder vallen routinebedrijf van de faciliteit gedurende meer dan 250 dagen per jaar, beheer en veiligheid van de splijtstofcyclus en kwaliteitszorg ; 2) efficiënt gebruik van de reactor voor een breed scala van onderwerpen : produktie van radio-isotopen en aanverwante activiteiten, bestralingsbeproeving van materialen voor splijtingsreactoren en voor toekomstige kernfusiereactoren, neutronentoepassingen voor onderzoekingen op het gebied van de vaste-stoffysica en materiaalkunde, neutronenradiografie als niet-destructieve testmethode en behandeling van bepaalde vormen van kanker met neutronen (boorneutronenvangsttherapie) en aanverwant onderzoek.
