Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in this area should seek to: . protect the Mediterranean Sea and its coastal regions; . conserve natural resources, in particular the habitats of species of flora and fauna, and biodiversity; . combat pollution, erosion, desertification and drought; . promote the integration of the environment into other policies, particularly in the agriculture, fisheries, energy, industry, land and urban planning, transport and tourism sectors, in order to promote the sustainable development of the Mediterranean region. 4.
