Your Rapporteur would like to point out that valuable data are also collected through the development of questionnaires managed jointly by Eurostat, the ITF and the UNECE in the Intersecretariat Working Group on Transport Statistics, which is mandated to contribute to the development of a coordinated statistical system for transport.

The proposal has been discussed with data producers and users on a technical level, in working groups on rail transport statistics and the Coordinating Group for Statistics on Transport, in the context of the European Statistical System.

In terms of costs, a pilot study launched in 2006 on behalf of the Working Group on European Statistical System Programming and Coordination revealed a very heterogeneous situation, with an average annual cost of producing rail transport statistics varying considerably even among Member States with similar size and market structures.

The new body, which will be called "European Advisory Committee on Community Statistical Information Policy" shall assist the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission with the coordination of the strategic objectives and priorities of the Community's statistical information policy.

[5] There exists also another body, the Statistical Programme Committee (composed of the Directors-General of the statistical institutes of the Member States), which assists the Commission in the general coordination of the multi-annual statistical programmes and is consulted extensively by the Commission on a wide range of issues (Council Decision 89/382/EEC, Euratom of 19 June 1989, establishing a Committee on the Statistical Programmes of the European Communities - OJ L 181, 28.6.1989, p. 47).

MEDSTAT (regional cooperation project between Euro-Mediterranean statistical institutes, coordinated by Eurostat and financed by MEDA to the tune of 20 million euros over the period 1996-2000) has launched a sub-project, "Med-Trans", designed to establish cooperation on transport statistics in the Mediterranean area in order to meet the demand for information on this subject.
In het kader van zijn activiteiten op het gebied van vervoer, heeft MEDSTAT (regionaal project van samenwerking van de euro-mediterrane statistiekbureaus, gecoördineerd door Eurostat en gefinancierd door MEDA ten belope van 20 miljoen euro in de periode 1996-2000) een subproject gelanceerd, "Med-Trans", om een samenwerking tot stand te brengen op het gebied van de vervoersstatistieken voor het Middellandse-Zeegebied, teneinde aan de informatiebehoeften op dit gebied te voldoen.
