The new body, which will be called "European Advisory Committee on Community Statistical Information Policy" shall assist the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission with the coordination of the strategic objectives and priorities of the Community's statistical information policy.

The Directive essentially provides that the Member States must draw up shipping statistics, which will be harmonized between the various countries and coordinated with existing statistics on the transport of goods by road, rail and inland waterway.
