Directive 2002/49/EC on the assessment and management of environmental noise creates a common approach to avoiding, preventing or reducing the harmful effects of exposure to environmental noise.

It aims at monitoring the environmental problem caused by noise in major agglomerations and in the vicinity of main transport infrastructures, including airports, at making information on environmental noise and its effects available to the public, and at requesting competent authorities to draw up action plans with a view to preventing and reducing environmental noise where necessary and to preserving environmental noise quality where it is good.

The directive will not only serve as a means for assessing and evaluating environmental noise, it will in addition provide a basis for developing future Community measures to reduce noise emitted by major sources, in particular from road and rail vehicles and infrastructure, aircraft, outdoor and industrial equipment and mobile machinery.
