F. whereas, like Nabeel Rajab, many human rights defenders, such as Naji Fateel, Danish human rights defender Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, Swedish political activist Mohammed Habib Al-Muqdad and others in the so-called Bahrain 13, have been detained, subjected to judicial harassment in Bahrain, imprisoned and are serving long or life-long sentences as a direct reprisal for their work in defending human rights; whereas most of them have reportedly been subjected to violence, ill treatment and physical or psychological torture;

Respecting, promoting sexual and reproductive health, and protecting and fulfilling reproductive rights is a necessary condition to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women to enable them to enjoy all their human rights and fundamental freedoms, and to prevent and mitigate violence against women.

Asserts that, in implementing the specific Cairo International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) prohibition on coercion or compulsion in sexual and reproductive health matters, with regard to the legally binding international human rights instruments, the EU acquis communautaire and the Union policy competencies in this matter, Union assistance should not be provided to any authority, organisation or programme which promotes, supports or participates in the management of any action which involves such human rights abuses as coercive abortion, forced sterilisation of women and men, determining foetal sex resulting in prenatal sex selection or infanticide, especially where such actions set their priorities in response to psychological, social, economic or legal pressure.

Member States shall provide appropriate medical and psychological care to persons enjoying international protection who have special needs, such as accompanied or unaccompanied minors, pregnant women, elderly persons, mentally or otherwise disabled persons or persons who have been victims of torture, trafficking in human beings, rape or other serious forms of psychological, physical or sexual violence.
