The report concludes that the greatest potential in the application of ICT in solving road transport safety problems is offered by the Intelligent Vehicle Safety Systems, which use advanced ICT for providing new, intelligent solutions which address together the involvement of and interaction between the driver, the vehicle and the road environment.

The Commitment was an innovative approach to road safety, as it contained both passive and active safety elements, as well as a commitment by the industry to progressively install additional active safety devices, including ICT elements.

Considers that the use of ICT in the road transport sector and its interfaces with other modes of transport will make a significant contribution to improving environmental performance, efficiency, road transport safety and security, public safety and the mobility of passengers and goods, while also ensuring the proper functioning of the internal market, greater competitiveness and higher employment; stresses the imperative need to adapt ICT standardisation policy which will not only contribute to the development of ITS but also to speeding up work on technical standards for electric vehicles and smart grids and meters; these should be implemented in the context of the following priority area: provision at EU level of information services concerning multimodal transport options;

Observable first and foremost in small-sized industries, agro-food industries, of which 90% are SMEs, will particularly benefit from many research activities, including targeted dissemination and technology transfer activities, in particular as regards the integration and uptake of advanced eco-efficient technologies, methodologies and processes and the development of standards. High-tech start-ups from the bio-, nano- and ICT are expected to provide important contributions to the areas of plant breeding, improved crops and plant protection, advanced detection and monitoring technologies for ensuring food safety and quality, and new industrial bioprocesses.
