For example, in certain Member States growing numbers of patients are contracting Clostridium difficile infections, which account for about 5% of all HAIs in Europe and are estimated to be the cause of 2% of hospital readmissions. The financial burden of such infections on Europe’s healthcare systems is estimated to be EUR 3.7 million in 2013.
