(g) to take the requisite measures to protect and conserve the world, regional, national and local environments and manage natural resources sustainably, taking account of the links between the environment and development.

4. On the other hand, the EU has made clear throughout the US-Japan discussions that the Most-Favoured-Nation principle must be respected: no bilateral deal would be acceptable if it resulted, either in law or in fact, in any discrimination, direct or indirect, against EU interests.

The Partnership and Cooperation Agreement will replace the Trade and Cooperation Agreement of 1989 between the EC and the Soviet Union as far as the Republic of Kazakhstan is concerned and covers in particular the following areas : - political dialogue (including the possibility of meeting at the political level); - trade in goods (on the basis of most-favoured-nation treatment); - provisions affecting business and investment, including labour conditions and establishment and operation of companies (Kazakhstan offers full national treatment for establishment and operation of Community companies); - cross-border supply of services; - payments and capital; - intellectual, industrial and commercial property protection; - economic cooperation in many areas. The general principles of the Agreement state democratic values, respect for Human Rights and market economy principles as essential elements of the Partnership established by the Agreement.
