55. Considers that betting on sport is a form of commercial exploitation of competitions and calls on the Commission and the Member States to protect betting from unauthorised activities, from unlicensed operators and from suspicions of match fixing, in particular by recognising organisers’ property rights with regard to their competitions, guaranteeing a significant contribution from betting operators towards funding mass-participation and grassroots sports and by protecting the integrity of competitions with an emphasis on education for athletes; considers, however, that such property rights should not prejudice the right of short reporting as stipulated by Directive 2007/65/EC (Audiovisual Media Services Directive);
55. is van mening dat sportweddenschappen een vorm van commerciële exploitatie van sportwedstrijden zijn en verzoekt de Commissie en de lidstaten deze te beschermen tegen elk niet-toegestaan gebruik, tegen uitbaters zonder vergunning en tegen verdenkingen van wedstrijdmanipulatie, in het bijzonder door de erkenning van eigendomsrechten van organisatoren voor hun competitie, de garantie van een aanzienlijke bijdrage van uitbaters van sportweddenschappen aan de financiering van amateursport en de bescherming van de integriteit van competities met de nadruk op onderwijs voor sporters; meent echter dat deze eigendomsrechten niet het recht op korte verslagen mogen aantasten dat is vastgelegd in Richtlijn 2007/65/EG (richtlijn Audiovisuele mediadiensten);

The importance of this report derives not only from the forthcoming 2004 Olympic Games in Europe, to be held in Athens, the cradle of sports competition.

I support the call made by Mr Mennea in his report for sport to be accorded a higher status in the school curriculum as well as his plea that the specific nature of sport be enshrined in the Treaties, otherwise we shall tend to see sport as little more than another domain of free economic competition.
