21. Calls on the Commission to assess, in close cooperation with Member States and national actors in the sector, what innovative actions they can take in order to promote ad hoc European holiday packages during major historic, cultural and sporting events that certain Member States will be hosting in the next few years, such as the Olympic Games, the Universal Expositions and others, with a view to promoting destination ‘Europe’ with all its rich diversity; takes the view that European and international events of different kinds should be promoted in conjunction with existing local tourist amenities;
21. verzoekt de Commissie in nauwe samenwerking met de lidstaten en de nationale actoren in de sector te beoordelen welke innoverende acties zij kunnen ondernemen voor de bevordering van Europese ad hoc-pakketreizen tijdens de grote historische, culturele en sportevenementen die de komende jaren in sommige lidstaten zullen plaatshebben, bijvoorbeeld de Olympische Spelen, de Wereldtentoonstelling en andere, om Europa in al haar rijke diversiteit te promoten als bestemming; is van mening dat de promotie van de verschillende soorten Europese en internationale evenementen moeten worden gekoppeld aan het bestaande toeristische aanbod ter plaatse;

Calls on the Commission and the Member States to ensure that the tourism sector is complying with existing rules on the safety of tourist amenities, especially those concerning fire safety, emergency planning, child equipment safety, staff training and the needs of people with disabilities and to draw up European standards where this is deemed necessary;

Tourists in the EU easily forget that they enjoy basic amenities, such as being able to drink the water everywhere and eat without getting food poisoning, and to walk along the street and travel unescorted.

Emphasises the key role which the development of sustainable tourism can play as a force for economic development and advocates long-term financial support for the building of the requisite infrastructure (roads, ports, airports, etc.); draws attention, however, to the Commission's failure to acknowledge that regional and local ownership of tourist amenities is fundamental to that sustainability and must be encouraged in order to reduce the outflow of profits to ensure that local people are not forced into roles as menial workers and to prevent the ultimate destruction of landscapes;
