(24) Dust from steel shops is normally treated through two different processes: the so-called Waelz process, which involves burning the dust mixed with coke and sand at high temperatures and whose main disadvantage is the production of very low value slag and the emission of high quantities of combustion gases; and the chemical stabilisation/solidification process, which, by mixing the dusts with other elements, allows the resulting waste to be dumped in controlled sites since it can be classed as non-toxic and non-dangerous.
(24) Het stof uit de staalfabriek wordt doorgaans door twee verschillende procédé's behandeld: enerzijds door het zogenoemde Waelz-procédé waarbij het met cokes en zand gemengde stof bij hoge temperaturen wordt verbrand; het grootste nadeel hierbij is de productie van minderwaardige slak en de uitstoot van grote hoeveelheden verbrandingsgas; anderzijds door middel van het chemische stabilisatie-/stollingsproces, waarbij het stof met andere elementen wordt vermengd en het beheer van de ontstane residuen op gecontroleerde locaties mogelijk wordt gemaakt omdat zij als niet-toxisch en niet-gevaarlijk kunnen worden beschouwd.
