The EU provides rules to coordinate national social security systems and ensure social security protection when you move within Europe (EU28, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland).The rules only provide for the coordination of social security systems to determine which system a mobile citizen is subject to.

A characteristic example is Greece where, with the collusion of the Commission and PASOK and ND governments and the Court of Justice of the European Communities (ECJ), the retirement age for women working in the public sector is being postponed by between 5 and 17 years, and the public and social character of the social security system is being called into question.

Calls on the Member States to take serious account of the need to redesign traditional pension systems which are based on systematic risk assessments and the assumption of a typical, standard life course and adjust the social security system in line with the reforms of the pension system, this given that the assumed standard course of life is changing rapidly, and that so-called 'patchwork biographies' will become more and more common; believes that this could lead to a new social risk of increasing unpredictability for many individuals and for vulnerable groups in particular, especially immigrants, low-skilled workers, single parents and those with other caring responsibilities; stresses that this can lead to an early exit from the labour market or reduced participation in it; points out that a transformation of the pension systems is also necessary to achieve a flexible labour market;

Individual Member States have their specific social security systems. I am convinced that coordination of the systems, transparency, elimination of bureaucracy and the electronic information exchange system will be beneficial to all EU citizens.

It is of the utmost importance that there is coordination of social security systems. It is important to have coordination of pension rights.
