Définition: Trouble caractérisé par une altération de la mémoire, des difficultés d'apprentissage et une réduction de la capacité à se concentrer sur une tâche, sauf pendant des périodes de courte durée. Le sujet éprouve souvent une fatigue mentale accentuée quand il fait des efforts mentaux, et un nouvel apprentissage peut être subjectivement difficile même quand il est objectivement réussi. Aucun de ces symptômes ne présente une sévérité suffisante pour justifier un diagnostic de démence (F00-F03) ou de delirium (F05.-). Ce diagnostic ne doit être fait qu'en présence d'un trouble somatique spécifié; il ne doit pas être fait en présence de l'un des troubles mentaux ou du comportement classés en F10-F99. Le trouble peut précéder, accompagner ou succéder à des infections et des troubles physiques très divers, cérébraux et généraux, sans qu'il existe obligatoirement des preuves directes en faveur d'une atteinte cérébrale. Il peut être différencié d'un syndrome post-encéphalitique (F07.1) et d'un syndrome post-commotionnel (F07.2) sur la base de son étiologie, de sa symptomatologie, moins riche et moins sévère, et de sa durée, habituellement plus courte.

Deze diagnose dient alleen gesteld te worden in verband met een gespecificeerde lichamelijke stoornis en dient niet gesteld te worden bij aanwezigheid van een van de psychische stoornissen of gedragsstoornissen die geclassificeerd zijn onder F10-F99. De stoornis kan voorafgaan aan, samengaan met of volgen op een grote verscheidenheid van infecties en lichamelijke stoornissen, zowel van de hersenen als algemeen, maar directe blijk van betrokkenheid van de hersenen is niet noodzakelijk aanwezig. Zij kan worden gedifferentieerd van postencefalitisch syndroom (F07.1) en postcommotioneel syndroom (F07.2) door haar verschillende etiologie, beperktere spreiding van over het algemeen lichtere symptomen en doorgaans kortere duur.
