De Commissie milieubeheer, volksgezondheid en consumentenbescherming is voorts verheugd over het voornemen van de Commissie om milieubescherming te verheffen tot een van de onderzoeksopdrachten van het Fonds, aangezien de tabaksteelt grote schade toebrengt aan het milieu door het buitensporige gebruik van meststoffen, excessieve irrigatie en het overdreven gebruik van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen.
The Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Consumer Protection also welcomes the Commission's intention to make environmental protection one of the areas of research by the fund, since tobacco growing causes substantial damage to the environment through the excessive use of fertilizers, over-irrigation and the disproportionate use of pesticides.
