In 2002 is op de twaalfde CITES-conferentie overeengekomen beperkingen in te stellen op de handel in Amerikaanse mahonie (door opname in bijlage II) in verband met overexploitatie, en in soorten van het genus Guaiacum.
At the 12th CITES Conference of the Parties in 2002 it was agreed to place restrictions on trade in big leaf mahogany (by listing in Appendix II) due to concerns about over-exploitation, as well as on species of the Guaiacum genus (lignum vitae, tree of life).
