Omschrijving: Deze categorie verschilt van andere in zoverre dat zij stoornissen omvat die niet alleen kunnen worden geïdentificeerd op grond van symptomen en verloop, maar ook van het bestaan van twee oorzakelijke factoren: een buitengewoon ingrijpende levensgebeurtenis die een acute stressreactie geeft of een belangrijke verandering in het leven leidend tot aanhoudend onaangename omstandigheden die resulteren in een aanpassingsstoornis. De stoornissen die hier bijeen zijn gebracht daarentegen, denkt men altijd te ontstaan als een direct gevolg van acute ernstige stress of aanhoudend trauma. De stressveroorzakende gebeurtenissen of aanhoudend-onaangename omstandigheden zijn de primaire- en overwegend causale factor en de stoornis zou niet zijn opgetreden zonder de inwerking ervan. The disorders in this section can thus be regarded as maladaptive responses to severe or continued stress, in that they interfere with successful coping mechanisms and therefore lead to problems of social functioning.
