Een werkgroep, waarin de spoorwegmaatschappijen van Nederland, Duitsland, Oostenrijk en Italië zijn vertegenwoordigd, is in samenwerking met de Zwitserse spoorwegen reeds bezig met de totstandbrenging van een reeks snelspoortrajecten die de havens in Noord- en Zuid-Europa verbinden en die voor het einde van het jaar operationeel moeten zijn (zie kaart).
