In South Asia, which in many respects remains distinct from the rest of the region, SAARC offers the opportunity of a broad regional cooperation with diversified aims, even if political tensions continue to hinder the establishment of a proposed "South Asia Free Trade Area", an essential step towards the insertion of that region into the international economic environment.

Hiertoe ondersteunt de EU de werkzaamheden en de dialoog met de Ontmoeting Azië-Europa (ASEM), de Stichting Azië-Europa (ASEF), het project Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN), de Zuid-Aziatische associatie voor regionale samenwerking (ASACR), de vrijhandelszone van Zuid-Azië (AFTA) en de Associatie van Zuid-Oost-Aziatische staten (ASEAN).
To achieve this, the EU supports work and dialogue with the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), the Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN), the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) and the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Inspanningen gericht op het versterken van subregionale economische samenwerking in het kader van SAARC moeten worden gestimuleerd, alsook de sterkere integratie van Zuid-Azië in de grotere Aziatische regio (bijvoorbeeld door uitbreiding van het aantal Zuid-Aziatische landen dat in ASEM participeert).
Efforts towards stronger sub-regional economic cooperation within SAARC should be encouraged, as well as a stronger integration of South Asia within the broader Asian region (for example through a broadening of Asian participation in ASEM).
