De door DG XII van de Commissie in januari 1997 verstrekte cijfers met betrekking tot de sociaaleconomische context van het Vijfde Kaderprogramma onthullen enkele alarmerende gegevens over de Europese situatie.
Data relating to the socio-economic context of the 5th Framework Programme and provided by the Commission DG XII in January 1997 reveals some alarming features about the European situation.

1. stemt in beginsel in met de in het voorstel van de Commissie voor een strategie van de Europese Gemeenschap inzake het behoud van de biologische diversiteit opgenomen analyse van de status quo, maar acht het noodzakelijk daarnaast concretere voorstellen voor de integratie van beschermings- en gebruiksmaatregelen in het kader van het gemeenschappelijk landbouwbeleid en het bosbouwbeleid in te dienen en wijst in dit verband op de voorstellen van de door DG XII in het leven geroepen Europese werkgroep voor onderzoek op het gebied van biodiversiteit (EWGRB);
1. Agrees in principle with the analysis of the status quo contained in the Commission proposal for a European Community biodiversity strategy; considers it necessary, however, in addition to the associated targets, to put forward more specific proposals on the integration of protection and utilisation measures in the framework of the common agricultural and the forestry policies and draws attention in this connection to the proposals of the European Working Group on Research and Biodiversity (EWGRB) set up by DG XII;
