Overeenkomstig artikel 114, lid 2, van het Verdrag tot oprichting van de Europese Gemeenschap is op 1 januari 1999 het Economisch en Financieel Comité („het comité”) ingesteld.
In accordance with Article 114(2) of the Treaty establishing the European Community, an Economic and Financial Committee (‘Committee’) was set up on 1 January 1999.

The Council approved a report, on the basis of work carried out by the Economic Policy Committee and the Economic and Financial Committee, on this year’s update of the Broad Economic Policy Guidelines (BEPGs), the EU’s guidelines on the economic policies to be followed by the Member States and the Community, for the 2003-05 period.

The Ministers underline their commitment towards continuing, with the support of the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC), the Economic Policy Committee (EPC) and the Commission, the surveillance of progress with economic, budgetary and structural policies in the accession countries, including for those countries which will not be in the first wave of EU accession, within the existing economic and fiscal policy co-ordination processes.

The work of the ELC in 1999 will be closely integrated with the work of other Committees whose work has direct relevance to the field of employment policy: the new Economic and Finance Committee (EFC) in particular, as well as the Economic Policy Committee (EPC). The ELC will also aim to coordinate work with the reformed Standing Committee on Employment.
